Northern NSW : Winter 2014 redo
Another milestone in care for people The Service reached another major milestone recently when doctors and paramedics began flying on each mission from the Broadmeadow base. These specialists undergo intense training for their work on the helicopter and are located at the base to ensure fastest possible response. Along with the retrieval teams from the John Hunter Hospital they are providing our community with first class care. Funding for their placement is provided by the NSW Government which has announced that doctors and paramedics will also be located at the Tamworth base from next year. Our crews have conducted some extraordinary rescue missions over the past few months and these often feature in the media because of their unusual nature. However, I would like to focus a little on the other vital role of aeromedical transfers. These missions involve moving patients between hospitals for much needed specialist care. As you would know our larger hospitals in NSW have sophisticated trauma handling and others have specialist units, such as the burns, spinal and children’s units. Many people in our operational regions live long distances from such specialist units, so when they are needed, the rescue helicopter is vital to their welfare. Your continued financial support is so important to the medical outcomes of those patients. Whether it is through workplace giving, a game of housie or attending a fundraising event, your dollars make it possible for them to access the best possible medical care available. Raising these funds is an on-going challenge for all of us but one made possible by your generosity. Thank you! Richard Jones General Manager www.rescuehelicopter.com.au 2 Rescue Magazine WINTER 2014
