Northern NSW : Rescue - Autumn 2014
it appeared I had an artery in my brain that was about to go. The aneurism was only a matter of time. It could just have easily happened in my bedroom at home, but I was really lucky that it occurred when people were around and medical staff were at hand. Nevertheless I was nervous on my first day back on the cruiser. I managed to calm the nerves with a drink and some karaoke.’ What’s your go-to karaoke song? ‘P !nk, Like a Pill. It’s actually a great song and really sums up some of my experiences over the last 11 months, in more ways than just the amount of medication I’ve been on.’ What else have you planned whilst you’re in Newcastle? ‘It’s been great stopping in at the base and seeing the helicopters and meeting the crew. I was unconscious for the entire rescue so it is like piecing the puzzle back together. A big part of that puzzle is my surgery at the John Hunter Hospital. I was still well out of it when I was airlifted by fixed wing aircraft home to Adelaide. While I’m in Newcastle I’m also going to visit the surgeon, Dr John Christie and the staff at the John Hunter Hospital. I want to quiz them about my hair cut – they had to shave me from the top of my head down past my ear. It was definitely worthwhile. I’m really happy to be able to share my story and use it as an example of the great work of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.’ Rescue Crewman, Glen Ramplin, showing Rodney the Bell 412 helicopter that airlifted him from Coffs Harbour to the John Hunter Hospital Quick thinking enabled Rodney to be transported swiftly to the John Hunter Hospital Rodney aboard the Life Saver Helicopter in the flight to Coffs Harbour Hospital Photos courtesy of Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter 9 Rescue Magazine AUTUMN 2014
