Northern NSW : Rescue - Autumn 2014
Post2Coast The work of two local charities has prompted Ambulance Officer, Clint McSpedden to test the endurance of the ‘Postie Bike’. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and John Hunter Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are the beneficiaries of the 1200 km Post2Coast that rolls from Inverell to Newcastle, via Mungindi in March. Both charities have played a part in the lives of Clint and fellow event organiser, Stuart Griffin. As an ambulance officer, Clint has seen firsthand the importance of a dedicated aeromedical service, particularly in rural communities. Stuart and his wife Eleasha’s twin girls spent 187 days in the NICU in 2009 after being born 15 weeks prematurely. Ducks 4 Dollars began in 2004 and each year attracts support from hundreds of local people and businesses who adopt a duck. On Australia Day a number of ‘fields’ of adopted ducks were released into Newcastle Harbour where they bobbed and floated with the tide across a 200 metre course for line honours and prizes. The winners were: • Corporate Duck Winner The Junction Hotel • Yellow Duck Winner Ticket 2233 - Edward Porters • 2nd Prize Winner Ticket 452 - Geoffrey Merlin • 3rd Prize Winner Ticket 4910 - Tim Burns • Sponsor Winner Moonshadow Cruises • Club Duck Race - Nobbys SLSC Ducks 4 Dollars is a unique fundraiser between the Rescue Helicopter and 13 local Surf Clubs which has raised more than $650,000 in 10 years. The 2014 event was supported by Westpac, McGrath, The Newcastle Herald, The Star, NBN Television, Colourpac, Newcastle Jockey Club, Hunter Sports Group and Moonshadow Cruises. Newcastle Race Day More than 180 people braved inclement weather conditions in November to attend the 2013 Pacific National Race Day at Newcastle Jockey Club in Broadmeadow. ‘ Despite the terrible weather the support was fantastic,’ said Service Event Coordinator Annette Watson. On the day sponsors BMG Aviation, Metroll, James Murray Funerals, Quarry Mining, The Retreat Port Stephens, Bishop Collins and Scottish Pacific helped raise $24,500 for the Service.
