Northern NSW : Summer 2013-14
Kokoda, Trek for Choppers For many Australians, stepping back in time and following the footsteps of our veterans along the Kokoda Track is something that registers quite high on the bucket list. Eight supporters of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service can now tick it off. In October, a group of fundraisers conquered the gruelling nine-day trek through the mountain ranges of Papua New Guinea. Despite the mental and physical challenges of Kokoda, each of the trekkers described the infamous trail as breath-taking and spectacular. Service Business Manager, Chad Griffith said the trek was something special. “Kokoda for me is a challenge I’ve always wanted to complete. It was a once in a lifetime experience, something that I will treasure,” he said. Setting out from Port Moresby on October 20, the Kokoda track wound its way across ridges and hills, through creeks and battlefields including the Isurava Battlefield where the immortal words; courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice are carved into the village’s memorial. The trekkers raised more than $28,000 for the Service’s essential overhaul of one of its lifesaving helicopters, a feat as impressive as finishing the trek itself. “Trek for Choppers has done a great job of raising awareness of the Service. The support from our community means we can be there when we’re needed and no-one has to pay for that service,” Mr Griffith said.
