Denman Ride wins NSW Award The annual Westpac Rescue Helicopter Charity Horse Ride has been named in the NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards. The ride which is organised by the Service’s Denman Volunteer Suppor t Group has been held on the first Saturday of September for the past 25 years and was given a highly commended Volunteer of the Year Community Service Award. Upper Hunter MP, George Souris, extended his congratulations to the Denman Volunteer Support Group on receiving the prestigious award. Service General Manager, Richard Jones, said that Volunteer Suppor t Groups were vitally important to the Service and its ongoing work in the community. ‘T he Denman Volunteer Support Group includes some par ticularly hard working and dedicated individuals and we are most for tunate to have them as part of the Helicopter team,’ Mr Jones said. The group has been successful in attracting support from local businesses and through its fundraising activities raised $35,000 in 2012 for the Rescue Helicopter. Singleton donations keep rising For three consecutive years the Singleton Volunteer Support Group has exceeded their previous years’ fundraising efforts for the Service. In 2012 the Group managed to raise a stellar $60,000 following on from the $31,000 raised in 2010, and $50,000 raised in 2011. The funds were officially donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service at a Christmas lunch and base tour in December. $500,000 fundraising milestone The Tamwor th Volunteer Support Group of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Ser vice has reached a significant fundraising milestone thanks to the ongoing support of the Tamwor th and district communities. Since the group began, more than 12 years ago, volunteers have worked tirelessly in an effort to achieve both financial and promotional support of the Ser vice and in that time they have raised over $500,000. The Tamwor th Volunteer Support Group also plays a significant role in bringing the annual Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Ball to the Tamworth community. Volunteers nominated in Australia Day Awards Tamworth Volunteer Support Group members, Barry Owen and Bill Warburton, were nominated for Tamwor th Citizen of the Year in the Australia Day Awards. Barry is the Tamwor th Volunteer Support Group’s Chairperson and has been instrumental in the group recently reaching the $500,000 fundraising milestone. A number of the Ser vice’s key fundraising activities, including Ride for Choppers, are successful because of the dedication Bill Warburton puts toward them. More volunteers nominated in the Australia Day awards include, Anne Legge from Bingara, and the entire Glenn Innes Volunteer Support Group. Maitland gives for Christmas Maitland Volunteer Support Group raised $60,000 for the Service in 2012. The group celebrated the year over Christmas lunch at member Monica Bank’s home in Lochinvar.
