Northern NSW : Spring 2012
Primary This is when the Service is called to an accident. Whether it is a motor vehicle, horse, boat or fire, the Service is called to transport a patient to a medical facility. Secondary A secondary mission or an inter-hospital transfer is when the Ser vices is tasked by NSW Ambulance to transfer a patient from one hospital or medical facility to another. Most often, you will see this type of mission where a patient is transferred from a smaller local hospital to a major regional centre or specialist hospital. Search & Rescue Search and rescue missions stem back to the Ser vice’s initial charter when it was dispatched during the summer months to do beach patrols and assist people who got in trouble while at the beach. Today, with larger aircraft, highly trained crew and medical staff, these missions extend to missions at sea and across more than 132,000 square kilometres of land. Each year, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Ser vice undertakes more than 1400 missions across the Hunter, Central Coast, Mid North Coast, New England and North West regions. The work of the Rescue Helicopters and their crews of pilots, crew and paramedics are generally described in three key categories.
