Northern NSW : Summer 2011
Our community New events big success Two new events have been an overwhelming success for the Service. Both events have been ‘outside the square’ of the Service’s normal event fundraising activities and have been a big success for both participants and the Service. The Drover’s Run, a four wheel drive ‘tour’ of outback NSW and the Great Wall Trek in China have introduced new people to the Service and have raised unexpected amounts. The Drover’s Run On Thursday the August 4 2011, 19 vehicles left Quirindi for a week’s journey across the State’s Nor th West. The Inaugural Drovers Run 4 Wheel Drive Outback Adventure travelled via Haddon Rig Station, Louth Races, Riola Station, Bourke, Lightning Ridge and Baradine before returning to Tamworth on Friday August 12. Participants entered the run in their own four wheel drives and sought sponsors from their local areas to assist with entry fees and fundraising. Entries came from across and beyond the region. Throughout the course they were welcomed by locals in the places they visited and stayed. Strong friendships were forged and pledges were made for the next Drovers Run which will be held in 2013. One of the highlights was the day at the Louth Races where many of the 3,000 attendees filled the donation tins of the Drover’s Run fundraisers. Winners were backed and the ‘Fashion in the Field’ would have made Jennifer Hawkins envious. A few nights later at Lightning Ridge the crew was surprised to be greeted by the Service’s General Manager Richard Jones and the great Bush Poet Murray Hartin. ‘Muz’ entertained everybody and a good night was had by all. The event has raised $60,000 for the Service - New England North West. A great effort from all involved.
