Northern NSW : Spring 2011
Christmas in July Ray O’Connor is a member of the Service’s Rescue Club and is a well-known Maitland hairdresser. He spent three days in John Hunter Hospital after falling from a ladder in 2009. Ray was painting the guttering at his daughter’s Largs home when the ladder slipped from underneath and he fell face down onto the ground. As well as facial injuries, he suffered two broken wrists. After assessment by the local Ambulance crew, the helicopter arrived in 14 minutes with paramedics aboard. Ray has fully recovered and is continuing his hairdressing business. So appreciative is Ray and his family for the Service’s efficient and ‘hospitable’ transport, that they now organise the ‘Bling Ball’ in Maitland. Attended by nearly 200 of Ray’s business contacts and friends, the Ball raised over $15,000 in the past two years. The funds are donated to the Maitland Volunteer Support group who assist on the night. Rescue Story Ray O’Connor and his wife Diana at the Bling Ball held in Maitland on 16 April 2011. Maitland Over 120 people enjoyed a Christmas feast and dancing at the Telarah Bowling Club on 23 July. Some ‘old-time rock and rollers’ were there to show their skills as the crowd danced to Ray Kelly and his orchestra. Many thanks to the Maitland Volunteer Support Group for their tireless efforts in organising this event. Belmont This year’s Annual Christmas in July Ball was again held at Belmont 16 Footers on Saturday 9 July. Joyce Mayne Bennetts Green were the major sponsor donating over $17,000 worth of electrical goods and prizes! Santa’s Warehouse was also very generous decorating the room in true Christmas spirit. The fantastic festive evening was coordinated by dedicated volunteer Colleen Praniess and her fantastic volunteer committee.
