Northern NSW : Rescue Winter15
Faces of 40 years ‘We have such a generous community. Like most in the Upper Hunter, they realise just how vital the Helicopter is.’ Margaret and Joe Matthews have supported the work of the Service since 1975 but have been fundraising for more than 16 years and during that time have raised about $1.6 million. ‘For a community-based organisation to win a highly competitive contract for aeromedical retrieval services for the whole of northern NSW is a great accomplishment.’ Cliff Marsh OAM has been the Chairman of the Service since 1992 ‘It has been an honour to be part of an organisation that grew from a community idea and today continues to be a vital part of that community.’ Barry Walton was one of the first crewman when he joined the Service in 1975. He helped establish the New England North West Operation and is now one of the Service’s Community Liaison Officers. ‘Why sit on the couch if you can get up and help somebody else?’ John Taylor has worked tirelessly for the Westpac Helicopter Rescue Service for the past 15 years and is Treasurer of the Tamworth Volunteer Support Group. He was named Tamworth’s 2015 Volunteer of the Year. Service General Manager, Richard Jones, was the guest speaker at the Newcastle Business Club in May. As the Service prepares for its 40th anniversary he took the opportunity to remind the business sector of its important role in ensuring that no one ever pays to be assisted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Richard is pictured with Peter Alcock and Evan Walton who were among the Service’s first crewmen when it was established in 1975 and Newcastle Business Club President Ty Brennock. A business address Over the past 40 years the Service has had the honour of working with and assisting thousands of people. In a special series, we are highlighting just a handful of these important people in the lead-up to our 40th anniversary on December 6 this year. We are pleased to introduce some of them to you in this issue of Rescue. 9 Rescue Magazine WINTER 2015
