Northern NSW : Rescue - Spring 2014
Mines Rescue team and Service crews at the recent Miners Health and Safety Conference One of the most important aspects of mine safety is being prepared should there be an accident. For many years the Service has worked with NSW Mines Rescue to develop plans and systems for those scenarios. Recently the Rescue Helicopter flew into Cessnock to join the NSW Mines Rescue team from Coal Services in a simulated rescue as part of the Health and Safety Conference. In the scenario a female driver had crashed her car and needed to be airlifted from the scene to hospital, sparking the involvement of the Rescue Helicopter. Training critical to response BHP ups the ante For the month of July, BHP Billiton doubled its contribution to the Service through its dollar for dollar matching scheme. For each dollar that its miners generously contributed through its payroll deduction scheme, BHP matched it by $2. BHP employees pulled together and in a massive effort contributed $189,000, which BHP matched and doubled. Service General Manager, Richard Jones, said the Service was grateful for its longstanding relationships with organisations and their employees in our community. ‘T he efforts of BHP really highlight the amazing power of how donating just a couple of dollars a week goes so far for your Rescue Helicopter,’ he said. BHP has supported the Service for well over 15 years. In that time it has been a major sponsor of the Black Coal Cup, entered a team in the 2014 Ride for Chopper, attended fundraising events including the Black Coal Ball and the Rescue Ball, and undertaken its own initiatives to support the Rescue Helicopter. 7 Rescue Magazine SPRING 2014
