Northern NSW : Rescue - Spring 2014
Joe hits nail on the head Allow me to paraphrase one of the region’s greatest fundraisers, Joe Mathews of Muswellbrook. ‘ Without the support of sponsors major fundraising events would not be the success they are,’ Joe says. He is so right. Most readers will know that Joe organises the Muswellbrook Black Coal Cup – a golf event that raises considerable amounts for the Service. He recently appealed to his local community to not only enjoy the golf and to contribute funds for the Rescue Helicopter, but also to recognise what the event major sponsors have to offer. These sponsors, like Joe and his wife Margaret and so many other generous people, understand that every day some people in our regions will need urgent transfer to medical help. They know that when the Rescue Helicopter arrives those people in need are in the best possible hands. They know that the skilled pilots and crew and the professionalism of the medical and paramedical crew will ensure the fastest and best possible access to the care needed. Joe was talking about organisations like Westfund Health, Muswellbrook Holden, Maritime Mining Power Credit Union, Harvey Norman and Coates Hire. Both Joe and I know from experience that these sponsors expect nothing in return for their contribution to the Rescue Helicopter, and this is why he made his appeal in the Muswellbrook Chronicle and why I support him. The Service sees this kind of generosity every day and I have no doubt it stems from a sense of community, a sense of belonging to a system that protects our community and from a sense of caring. It is an on-going challenge for our community that we help to fund this Service. I have so often heard sponsors such as those at the Black Coal Golf Day make the point that they will give what they can simply to ensure that anyone who needs the Service knows it will be there and no patient ever has to pay.
